Placebo Buttons

0

I just read an interesting article about how many of the buttons in public don’t actually do anything anymore. I have always wondered if crosswalk buttons work. Apparently if the article is to be believed only one crosswalk button in Austin functioned in 2010. I am never sure if pushing the crosswalk button does anything but I figure it doesn’t hurt to press the button anyway.

Guns, Guns, and More Guns!!!

0

To celebrate our nation’s birth, my friends and I went to Red’s Indoor Range to shoot some guns. Since a couple of my friends hadn’t shot a gun before, we started off with a .22 pistol which was fun, easy to use, and not very “scary”. After firing off a few rounds each, we exchanged our guns for a Smith and Wesson 9mm semi-automatic pistol and a Smith and Wesson revolver (not sure what caliber round). These guns were more fun because of the increase in power. I was a little disappointed that my friends didn’t want to shoot any rifles. Red’s has an AR-15 and an AK-47 available to rent. Some of the other people shooting definitely had more powerful guns going by their volume. One of the guns made me jump/twitch each time it fired even when I knew it was coming. The great thing was that it turned out to be less expensive than I had thought. It also made me want to own a gun of my own so I can go shoot more.

Interesting Art Styles

I recently came across two artists that have interesting styles. The first article I found was about finger paintings done by Judith Braun. Below is an example with symmetry created by using both hands.

The second article is about landscapes carved from books by Guy Laramee.

Panhandlers Against the Penny

0

Most days there is a panhandler on the median at the left turn from Braker to southbound Burnet. Today there wasn’t a panhandler so I noticed that there were pennies scattered all over the median. I kinda assume that people end up giving random change from purchases to the panhandlers and the panhandlers dump the pennies because it takes too much time to collect enough to be worth something. This reminded me of a conversation I had with some friends about the movement to phase out the penny. I also think the nickel should go and added both to my platform for my campaign for President in 2020.

Paintball!!!

This weekend I am going paintballing which I am very excited about especially after seeing the video below. I know most of it was probably staged to a certain degree but I have never played any of the large paintball games. I think it would be awesome to get two moon bounces with generators and float them on Lake Travis and have two paintball teams trying to board each other. Jet skis would make things even better.

ComicPalooza!!

Memorial Day weekend my housemate, David Wogan, and I went to Houston for ComicPalooza (a smaller ComicCon) and to visit our friend David Agu. I got an autograph from George Takei (Star Trek, Heroes) and Rachel Luttrell (Stargate Atlantis). I also got pictures taken with Kevin Sorbo (Hercules) and Christopher Judge (Stagate SG-1).

Houston drivers are crazy. In the first twenty-four hours in Houston, my friends and I saw two accidents occur and the aftermath of a third. We also almost got hit once and saw a lot of reckless driving. We spent more than 30 minutes trying to find a parking space in the Houston Galleria parking garage. At one point a woman threw some stuff in her trunk and got in her car so we thought she was leaving. We sat in our car for 10 minutes waiting for her to leave. She end up getting back out of her car and going back into the mall. She apparently left something inside since another car was in her spot when we came back around after having left in frustration.

Decentralized Dance Party – RETURN TO AUSTIN – SXSW!

0

Last night my friend, Jonathan, and I joined the Decentralized Dance Party (DDP) and had a blast. The premise of the DDP is to have a mobile dance party by eliminating the large equipment like speakers. The DJs achieve this by transmitting the music over the radio and the people at the DDP have boomboxes tuned to the frequency they are using. Everyone is encouraged to bring their own radios but the hosts (Tom and Gary) also provide some. The boomboxes they provide are awesome some are normal ones but a lot of them are suitcases and briefcases modified with speakers.
We started under the south side end of the 1st street bridge. It took awhile to get started and there were supposed to be at least 3,000 people but the rain kept a lot of them home so there were fewer than a thousand people attending. The theme was exercise so everyone dressed in workout clothing. Once it got going it was awesome. We would walk/dance to different locations the hosts had picked and dance for awhile there before moving on. We first stopped in front of the Palmer Events Center, then went to the old power plant by crossing the Lamar pedestrian bridge, then to the steps of city hall, finally along 6th street. Almost all the songs played were ones I knew which was great. There were a lot of classics like Eye of the Tiger, Bohemian Rhapsody, YMCA, and Don’t Stop Believing and there were artists I hadn’t heard in awhile like Darude and Scooter. There was a guy on stilts which was amazing since there was a lot difficult terrain and near the end on 6th street, a guy went crowd surfing on a surf board so was able to stand up.

3 out of 3 bad experiences with changing tires

0

I have had three bad experiences out of the three times I have been involved with changing tires.

The first time I had to change a tire, one of my dorm-mates was driving a group of us to go see The Tuxedo (one of Jackie Chan’s only bad movies). The guy driving the car was an idiot and didn’t yield when merging onto the IH-35 frontage road from Dean Keaton. We hit another car and spun around. Luckily no one was hurt but we did bang up the woman’s car some and gave her a flat tire. She was very pissed off of course. We tried to help her change her tire but the ground was not level so the weight of the car bent the car jack in half. She became even more pissed with good reason.

The second time occurred when I was employed at a blacksmith shop as a summer job. My car (really my brother’s Subaru Forester but I was using it over the summer) got a flat on the way to work. I jacked the car up and got the tire off when the car rolled off the jack. I had been an idiot and not but on the parking break. You would think a mechanical engineering student would have thought things through better. The car hit its front axle which made me concerned that I seriously broke something. Luckily I was able to get a hydraulic jack from my work to lift my car so I could finish changing the tire.

The Monday before last (11/28/2011) was the third time I had to change a tire. I was heading to the UT campus to give a presentation from north Austin when I had a blowout on Mopac (Loop 1). This was one of my worst fears; To have a flat tire on a highway. After the first two incidents, I was worried about changing the tire especially since it was rush hour and the flat was on the driver’s side of the car so car were whizzing by. I finished putting on the donut and lowered the car back down when I realized that the donut was flat as well. I called my brother and a friend to see what they thought I should do. My brother thought I should try to slowly drive to a gas station (I was near an exit) and fill up the tire an get home and fix my real tire. after talking to them, I looked again at my tire and I decided it was too low (on the rim) to drive on. I called AAA to get them to tow me back to my house. Luckily, the AAA guy had a compressor on his truck and was able to fill my tire up. After he was don, I got in my car to leave but my battery had died while I waited. I was able to flag the AAA guy down before he left and got a jump. I was finally able to get home and I decided to get new tires the next day.

Lesson to be learned is to not have me help you change tires since things will go wrong.
