Kamelot and Nightwish!!!

0

Last night I went to the Kamelot and Nightwish concert at Emo’s East. It was awesome! This is the first metal concert I have been to and I was not sure what to expect. I sometimes get slightly embarrassed when watching music videos because of how into it the bands sometimes get but it worked well because the crowd was also going crazy. I will definitely go see either of them again if they come back to Austin. I also would like to see Hammerfall in concert.

Legos!!!!

0

Legos are one of my favorite toys. I spent hours as a kid playing with them especially the electric train set and the technic Legos. I still find time every once in a while to pull out my Legos and play with them. I have transitioned from creating whole cities (that my brother would take break like Godzilla) to mechanisms. I recently found videos on YouTube (of course) where people show off there Lego devices or constructs. It is amazing to see what people have gotten Legos to do. I biggest problem nowadays is setting aside enough time to come up with a good project and execute it. I normally just have time to tinker with them. Below are some of the many awesome videos.

In Memory of Robin Harris

Chuckie Harris, Robin’s brother, created a video composed of Robin’s friends’ comments and pictures as a tribute to her.

RIP Robin Harris

2

Today, I found out that my friend, Robin Harris, from LBJ High School passed away. She was one of the happiest people I knew. She will be missed. I hope she rests in peace and my condolences go out to her family. I memorial service is tentatively planned for October 13th in Austin for those of you who knew her and are interested in attending.

Update 09/24/12: Robin’s brother, Chuckie Harris, has made a facebook group, Rest in Peace, Robin Harris, to share memories of Robin.

Gangnam Style

0

About a week ago, I heard “Gangnam Style” by PSY on the radio. I was intrigued because I normally don’t hear Korean pop singers on 96.7 KissFM, the top 40s radio station. When I got home I looked for the music video and I was surprised at how many views it had already received (I clearly don’t have my finger to the pulse of popular music). The video currently has 236 million views. The song is fairly addicting. The interpretation of song was told to me as being about the Gangnam district in Seoul, which is known to be straitlaced during the day and party city at night. Apparently the video is so popular that rival gangs in Bangkok are now having dance offs using Gangnam Style and shooting at each other when the victor was disputed. Below is the video.

Here is the Hyuna version of the song. Hyuna is the girl lead and is singer in her own right.

I also found an awesome parody by a UT student organization.

Another parody.

NSF Announced Yesterday that they are funding the NASCENT Center!!

0

For more than a year, my supervisor, Dr. S.V. Sreenivasan, has been working with other professors at the University of Texas at Austin, the University of New Mexico, and the University of California at Berkeley and with industry partners on a grant to create a new ERC (Engineering Research Center). Yesterday, the NSF announced that we were one of three proposals that won out of the initial 70 proposals. We will be getting an initial $18.5 million and if we can prove that we used the money well after 5 years we can get another $20 million. I actually created a lot of the technical graphics in the proposal. I am also going to help find the equipment we will be acquiring for the new cleanroom lab at UT. Below are some articles written about the center. I am featured in some of the pictures as well as my hands holding wafers.
