Thanksgiving!!
0Last week was Thanksgiving and I had a great time. On Thanksgiving Day, I went out to my parents’ property on Lake Travis. The cabin/house my family has been building for the past 15+ years is nearing completion. One of my best friends (and housemate) also joined us with his family (the Wogans). They brought bulgogi (Korean BBQ) which was great because I am not the biggest fan of turkey.
The best part of Thanksgiving was going to Garner State Park with my friends Jessica and Jonathan. We left Friday morning and spent the afternoon hiking. That night we cooked over an open fire which I haven’t done in awhile. Even though it wasn’t as cold as I expected it was nice to have a fire. We decided to go night hiking to one of the two official caves. The crystal cave was slightly disappointing because it didn’t go very far. We also missed the dance party that the park held that night. Luckily Jonathan’s tent didn’t leak because it rained quite a lot that night. We did some more hiking on Saturday and we explored a cave that was off the map. It was the closest I have ever been to being truly claustrophobic. The cave went back more than 100ft and was completely dark when the flashlight (Jessica’s iphone app) was turned off. I definitely need to visit Garner State Park more. It is a great place to do more than hiking.
Bowling!!
0Last night I went bowling at Highland Lanes. I had a blast. I have not been bowling in quite a while and I had forgotten how fun it is. It also helps that I was bowling with some of my best friends. I also did some of my best bowling. I scored 116, 143, 180, and 167. I have scored that high before for one game but I normally would have lower scores for the other games. I normally average around 120. One of my friends, Pete Backlund, had an even better average score of around 173 which is amazing. I enjoyed watching everyone’s different style of bowling.
National Acrobats of the Peoples Republic of China
0Today I saw the National Acrobats of the Peoples Republic of China at The Long Center with my friend, Cass. The acts were amazing. They showed great strength, flexibility, and balance. One act had 12 of the acrobats balanced on one bike. Another act had a female acrobat using her head to balance on the head of another acrobat. It is actually quite difficult to describe the different acts and how awesome they were. It was definitely worth the money and I would go again given the chance.
Picture of Cass on the balcony at the Long Center. (wasn’t able to get the best contrast with the ipod camera)
Los Lonely Boys at Blues on the Green
0I just got back from Blues on the Green at Zilker Park in Austin, Texas. Blues on the Green is a series of free live concerts through-out the summer at Zilker Park. Tonight was the last concert of the summer featuring Los Lonely Boys. I had a great time. It was one of the better live concerts I have been to mainly because they played for the perfect amount of time. For a lot of live concerts, my back starts hurting by the end either from standing in one place (packed in like sardines) or sitting on the ground without back support (also my legs fall asleep) so I get antsy. It probably helped that I got up to get Salt Lick BBQ (sausage wrap = delicious) and to get Amy’s Ice Cream (oreo = uber-delicious) so I got to stretch my legs. I also had great company including Addison, Marissa’s well behaved dog.
One thing that detracted from the concert were the smokers. I hate when people smoke in crowds especially when there are kids around. I also some smokers putting out their cigarettes on the ground and left them there. I don’t understand why they can’t throw out the butts.
StarCraft 2 mod/expansion
0I have recently started replaying StarCraft 2:Wings of Liberty (Terran campaign). It is an awesome RTS video game that came out last year and was the long awaited sequel to the original Starcraft released in 1998. I am looking forward to the next two installments, Heart of the Swarm and Legacy of the Void, the Zerg and Protoss campaigns respectively.
I am not very good at the multiplayer probably because I am too lazy to put in a lot of effort. My APMs or actions per minute are very low, I am slow to respond to the other players strategies, I lose track of all of the map, and I don’t know all the counters.
I have an interesting idea on how to expand StarCraft 2’s play-ability which arose from my inability to micro well especially using units various special abilities and from the invention of auto-casting. Austo-casting was a blessing that let me use healers since I never had the ability to click on all the units I wanted healed. When auto-casting first showed up, I thought to myself, “why can’t all my units automatically do what I want so I can focus on macro”. I wanted to be able to right my own scripts so my army would respond the way I want e.g. cast psi-storm when there are a lot of marines in a group. I want to be able to write the script myself.
The idea of scripting to micromanage my army lead to the idea for an all AI league. The players would create their own AIs an pit them against each other. There would also be achievements for beating the different levels of Blizzard AIs. I am not sure how hard it is to script AI in StarCraft since the last time I dealt with AI was for a board game with discrete moves. I also don’t know how popular this feature would be but there have been plenty of complex custom maps created so I figure there are players willing to put in many hours of programming. The games would be shown like replays so that the programmers could see were their AIs need to be improved. Most games that I have watched had players only having one or two main armies with maybe some scouts. I would hope that the players could make sophisticated AIs where each unit might act like an individual or maybe act in squads so there could be simultaneous attacks on multiple bases or armies. It would be awesome if the AI editor could create complex AIs able to predict the opponents strategy and counter it. I also don’t know how the insane Blizzard AI is made so I don’t know how easy it would be to create an AI to beat it. Is it truly a “smarter” AI or does it get advantages like higher health or knowledge of its opponents.
Happy Birthday to Me!
0Today I celebrate my 28th birthday. I hosted a birthday party two weekends ago at my family’s property at Lake Travis (two weeks ago so that my brother could go since he left on his honeymoon the following week). It was probably one of the best birthday parties I have ever had mainly because so many of my friends were able to help me celebrate. We also had good food and fun stuff to do. Thanks to Stuart Cohen for bringing his potato gun which was able to blow holes in plywood. That thing is simple but awesome. One bittersweet note is that several of my friends have gotten jobs away from Austin so are moving away in the near future. Hopefully I will be able to do a better job of keeping in touch with them than I have in the past with other people that have moved away.
One thing that I found amusing is all the facebook salutations I have received today. I enjoy getting them but what amuses me is who they are from. Some of the people I haven’t seen or spoken to in years and yet they wish me happy birthday because facebook notes that it is that time of the year. The wall posts encourage me to remember who these people are, where I met them, and other good times associated with them.
Happy Fourth
0Happy 4th of July!! Also happy birthday to my god-brother/childhood friend Sam Minot!! This three day weekend/holiday has been fun except that there has been a burn ban so no fireworks (even the Austin City fireworks).
I just found this video taken of Bill Pullman (President Thomas Whitmore) at the Alamo Drafthouse Downtown for the Master Pancake mocks Independence Day. It is an alternate speech at the airport.
Last Night’s Dream
1I had a very vivid, long, and scary dream last night.
My dream of May 25-26 2011:
The dream starts with me trying to get home from somewhere (maybe camping, don’t really know/remember). I am driving a car and trying to make it to a hotel or something before closing time so I am driving really fast. A couple of times I drive off road but the experiences are luckily short until i am almost there. I am driving in pitch black since it is 9 something and forget that right before my destination the road takes a sharp left turn on a bridge. I overshoot, fly off the bridge, and start falling. It happens to be a fall that takes seconds so i am able to say my goodbyes. The fall is so long that I become impatient for the impact. Strangely enough the car slows at the last moment so I don’t have a fatal accident. I am able to walk away and my brother now enters my dream and helps me gather supplies from the car so we can walk to my original destination. When we get there, there is a buffet outside the doors along the wall. We decide to replenish our drinks which for me is orange juice. I pour my old juice under the table to fill up with new juice and then I realize that they actually provided a place to pour my old juice. At this point in the dream my brother and I are joined by my house-mate’s friend, Jake, when we decide to get home by going through the earth since it is a more direct route than across the surface. Luckily we only need to take a cord and not all the way through the center. My brother explains that there are caves we will be climbing through because of freezing or some nonsense (don’t really remember the crazy explanation). So we start climbing up a slope in side a cave and some normal shenanigans happen such as hats falling off and stopping to drink. We finally reach the top of a ridge inside the cave that we have to cross. The other side is fairly warm and wet. Jake decides to just jump/slide to the bottom where he comments that the slope was “steeper than expected”. My reaction is to say that I can’t go because I will die since I have used my luck already to survive the previous crashes and I will most likely stumble and break every bone in my body as i tumble down. At this point, the bottom changes from sloping rock to a pond with a rocky/gravelly shore. I then notice a crocodile on the shore headed for Jake. My mom is suddenly there and one of my families many exchange students is also in the water with Jake. The specific exchange student is not made clear. Jake starts swimming and somehow is able to stay out of reach of the lunging croc. He makes it on shore and tosses his life preserver at the croc an runs around to stay out of reach. The people on top of the ridge realize there is suddenly more than one croc and that one is hunting our exchange student who eventually gets eaten which is understandably horrifying (it is good that it wasn’t clear who it was). Jake at this point jumps back in the water for some reason and then a whole bunch of crocs start chasing him. At the last second, before he is eaten I able to force myself awake.

Wood Puzzles
0I recently found a website where a guy named Chris Yates creates wood puzzles as well as other multimedia projects. I don’t remember how I stumbled across this guy’s stuff but his puzzles look amazing. Some of them are multi-layered which makes them even cooler. Too bad the ones I want are either sold out or really expensive. You can look at his website http://www.chrisyates.net/store/puzz.htmlhere.
After finding his website I also found another website, http://woodgears.ca/, that looks like it has some pretty good woodworking projects.
